I've really enjoyed growing my own herbs this year, and peppers and tomatoes...instead of buying seasonal flowers that need to be dug up and transplanted every year, I've been growing herbs that I can use in my kitchen! Some of them will grow back after the winter freeze, so there's less throwing away of the plastic pots and materials that come with buying new plantings every season.

Here are some great ways (above link) to live greener in your Albuquerque home - simple and effective. Remember, it's not a big process to live greener. I have found that just carrying your own bags to the grocery can keep your garage cleaner while you live greener! The other day I was looking for some plastic bags to do some yard work; low and behold, no more plastic grocery bags!

I periodically go around the house and double check to make sure there are no unnecessary lights on; I'm thrilled when spring comes and I no longer am running cooling or heating; I use vinegar for all of my home cleaning...I hardly ever use paper towels, I use old bath towels cut up for my cleaning purposes and wash once a week.

Getting back up to speed on my Green blog - what I would like to do is start collecting 'green tips' for living.

The green movement is really just practical living. It's what we used to do as I grew up in Indiana...don't throw away things, see if the livestock would eat it, or if you could use it to fix something else you used it, and save everything in case you need it later. (In an organized fashion of course, no hoarding here)

My tip today - is that I have always used plain white vinegar for almost every cleaning project in my house. I've always had lots of those big plastic bottles left over, but I just found another use for those - hang on....HANGING PLANTERS for those upside down herb gardens we've been hearing about.

Stay tuned for how to build them, but seriously it's so easy even a 5 year old could do it.

I received an email from our office manager today, asking to review our paper 'packages' so that we could eliminate unnecessary paperwork that we don't utilize.

This is a great thing to do on a monthly basis. Review everything that you carry paper for, and ask yourself 'is this really needed'. When I told her to eliminate all three of the items that she sent as examples her response was "great!"

If the question hadn't been asked, how much longer would we have continued to have these pieces of paper hanging around.

Another question that I asked my marketing department was "how many home books do we want this year" and we decided NONE unless our sellers specifically request them.

You would be surprised how many people, when asked, don't really want or need the paper trail that we leave behind. All of our marketing materials are on-line, easy to find - and printable if someone wants to carry them around on paper.

Little changes, big results!

Money saving tips living in Green

Living in Green doesn't just mean materials, pipes and heaters. It also means just plain saving MONEY.

Some of my money saving tips that I try every day I'll share on this blog and I invite you to post yours.

I sell real estate, but I also love saving money wherever I can and making my Albuquerque home efficient and luxurious.

One thing I do is save leftovers for cooking later. This doesn't just mean little bits here and there. Did you know that you can freeze leftover salad and then use it in stews and pot roasts for a base? Just start your roast and add all of your leftover salad (including dressing) and cook away. Wonderful flavor and nutrients, too.

Same goes for leftover pieces of beef, chicken, fish - whatever - just combine in a container as used (and cooled) add to soups and stews.

You would be amazed at how quickly this adds up to a whole meal. Especially for these cold winter nights!

What is new in Albuquerque real estate for Green living?

One bit of exciting news is that, on the Association level, we are moving towards approval of new MLS fields for green features. As the chairperson for the Policy Committee for the Southwest MLS, I can tell you that we had a long meeting incorporating suggested changes into the existing components of our MLS system to present to the next level of committee approval.

What this means for a buyer? It means if you are looking specifically for an Albuquerque Green home with GREEN features, you will be able to search for those specific features and/or a home that has GREEN features. Some of these are certifications for NEW homes, and some will be features that have been retrofitted into the home such as Energy Star® appliances, tankless water heaters, water conservation features, etc.

As a seller what this means is that you will be able to specifically market your property to the buyers looking for these particular features. It will also help appraisers to compare your property other green homes in order to ensure that you get the full value for your hard work in upgrading your Albuquerque home.
